About Charminar

Popularly known as the 'Arc De Triomphe of the East', Charminar is a place of great significance for the city of Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh. Located in the old city of Hyderabad, Charminar stands tall as not only a sacred mosque but also as an important symbol of Mughal architecture. On the auspicious occasions like Ramzan, Eid Mubarak and Eid-Ul-Fitar special prayers are held at the mosque in the Charminar and all these occasions witness huge gathering of people in the city of Hyderabad which boasts of many sacred and revered mosques.

History

Charminar has a history to its creation. It was built by Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah in 1591 AD. Sultan constructed this minar at the place where he prayed to “Allah" to eradicate the plague that was taking a tool over lives in his beloved city. When he prayed, He did not only ask for the sufferings of his fellow Muslim brothers to end but he prayed for the collective ‘peace’ and ‘prosperity’ of the whole mankind. That is what makes this minar an important symbol of communal harmony and peace which becomes all the more evident from the fact that one of the Hindu temple has been built at the foot of one of the towers of Charminar.

Architecture

The 46 meters tall architectural wonder takes its name from the four minarets that form its core. Charminar is a square shaped monument with each side measuring 20 meters and a minaret standing to each of its side. One has to climb a total of 149 steps to reach the top of Charminar. The monument looks even more beautiful when it is illuminated at night.

The topmost floor of Charminar is entirely dedicated for the purpose of prayer or Namaaz. Earlier each of the floors of the minaret was meant for the separate branch of learning but this changed after the rule of British in India. From the top of Charminar you can have a view of almost entire Hyderabad city which is surrounded by lively bazaars but only visitors with special permission from the Archaeological Survey of India can have access to the 4th floor of Charminar.

Timings

The monument remains closed on Sundays and the tourists or visitors can visit the place anytime between 9 am to 5 pm on the working days and Saturdays.
