Located in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand, Nainital is often described as the "lake district of India" in the presence of the large number of lakes. The actual place of Nainital is set in a valley around the Kumaon Mountains of the Himalayan range. The altitude of Nainital is 8579 feet above sea level with the lake of Naini at its centre.

The climate of Nainital can be classified in the following categories.Summer – During the hottest months of India the maximum temperature of Nainital reaches about 27 degree centigrade and the minimum temperature comes down to about 7 degree centigrade.
Winter – During the months of winter every year between the months of December and February there is heavy snowfall. During this time the maximum temperature reaches up to 15 degree centigrade while the minimum temperature falls to – 3 degree centigrade.
